Education Therapy

Our Math Programme

The objective of DAS Math Program is to provide effective support to dyslexic students who have persistent difficulties in understanding math concepts.

The Math Program was soft launched beginning of 2009 at 4 DAS centres. To date, over 60 students (from Primary 1 to 6) are enrolled with the Maths programme, fronted by 10 educational therapists in 5 DAS centres (Bishan, Bedok, Parkway Parade, Queenstown, Woodlands).

To provide support to the educational therapists, international maths expert Dr. Steve Chinn conducts regular consultation and training.

Methodology

In a class of a maximum of 4 students, teaching is based on the needs of the child. Student learning is designed for success with a strong emphasis on concept building, addressing areas of skill deficit.

Currently, the syllabus covered focuses mainly on the lower primary level and is designed to build awareness in number sense and basic concept understanding. However, it has benefitted students from the upper primary levels just as much.

This is largely due to the teaching approaches, which progress from the concrete stage, with the use of tangible manipulatives, to representational and then abstract reasoning. Every stage of learning ensures that the child links mathematical ideas in a progressive and cumulative way.

The methodology applied constantly keeps in touch with the mainstream school math syllabus, with the aim of bridging the gap between the student's ability and mainstream syllabus.

Some of the common difficulties dyslexic students may face in mathematics:

-         counting forwards and backwards

-         understanding of number relationships and value of numbers

-         place value

-         times table facts

-         following multi-step operations

-         deficits in short term memory

-         understanding the vocabulary of mathematics

-         unable to organise work in space

Maths classes are offered as 1 hour per week.

Typically, the 1-hour math lesson will cover the following:

1. Number Drill

2. Review of concept

3. Introduction of new concept

4. Exercises

5. Review of class
