LEARNERS WITH DYSLEXIA IN HIGHER LEARNING

Together with Singapore’s Enabling Masterplan, many students with dyslexia who have received specialist support and intervention in primary and secondary schools have progressed to Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL).

However, dyslexia is a life-long learning difference. Continued support and the availability of resources are critical in enabling these students to cope with the academic rigour and expectations at the tertiary level. There are also some students whose learning challenges only become apparent when they embark on their tertiary education.

Therefore, identifying these students through dyslexia screenings (probability of dyslexia) and assessments (a formal diagnosis) is important in providing the necessary specialist support to help them better cope with their learning challenges.

DAS hopes to extend our support to students in Institutes of Higher Learning with specific learning differences who have yet to be identified or may continue to experience challenges in their learning.

Dyslexia in IHL Booklet

360 DEGREE PACT PROJECT

DAS has collaborated with Lim Hoon Foundation to raise awareness and provide pivotal support for students with dyslexia and other co-occurring learning difficulties in Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs). Lim Hoon Foundation is a charitable trust and one of their primary objectives is to promote academic achievement for all students. The Foundation also believes that everyone is entitled to a holistic education. 

The 360 Degrees Pact Project is therefore launched by DAS in collaboration with Lim Hoon Foundation Limited with an objective to identify and maximise the potential of IHL learners with dyslexia.

The project aims to provide extensive support for all IHL learners with or at risk of dyslexia through:

  • Free awareness talks
  • Free dyslexia screening of Year 1 IHL students.
  • Free or subsidised dyslexia assessment for needy students who meet criteria
  • Free or subsidised intervention through the iStudySmart™ programme for needy students who meet criteria

*The above are limited based to the funding available and utilised.

 To achieve this, the Lim Hoon Foundation Limited has committed to fund the 360 Degrees Pact Project and provide financial support for IHL learners with or at risk of dyslexia from low income families.

IDENTIFICATION: ASSESSMENTS IN HIGHER LEARNING

It isn’t uncommon for us to see students in higher learning seeking assessment services to support their successful learning journey.

DAS SpLD Assessment Services (SAS) believes in providing support to those who struggle with learning, regardless of their backgrounds. Our psychologists determine the learner’s profile as each learner has his/her own unique profile with their individual strengths and weaknesses. SAS provides clarity to individuals grappling with the challenges of specific learning difficulties through consultations to guide them on the next steps.

We seek to profile the needs of every learner, and for them to discover and understand their potential.

DAS also offers FREE dyslexia screening for Year 1 IHL students.

INTERVENTION: ISTUDYSMART™ PROGRAMME

Lessons from the iStudySmart™ programme are delivered through a blended learning approach where it combines both scheduled online consultation sessions – to provide personalised feedback and e-learning – where content is easily accessible online for students to learn and progress at their own pace.

The objectives of the programme includes bridging the gap in intervention and resources for students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs) at the tertiary level, developing students to become self-directed, independent and responsible learners, and building a strong foundation in them to excel and fulfill their future goals and aspirations.

AWARENESS TALKS

DAS serves to elevate public awareness and understanding of dyslexia in higher learning through awareness talks. We have been actively liaising with various Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) to arrange for FREE awareness talks in the hopes of empowering different groups of audience.

DAS conducted an awareness talk at Singapore Polytechnic (SP) on 8 November 2022 for students and staff to learn more about dyslexia and some of the challenges faced by IHL students with dyslexia.

On 28 February 2023, DAS delivered an awareness talk for staff and students from Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), sharing more about dyslexia and the difficulties experienced by IHL students with dyslexia.
