THROUGH THE EYES OF DYSLEXIA

As part of our efforts to spread awareness of the strengths of dyslexia, Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) and United Overseas Bank (UOB) have come together to organise an inclusive art competition.

ARTVenture – a branch under the DAS’s range of programmes, organises DAS first-ever Art Competition and we want everyone to join us!  Regardless of your expertise, come and be part of this significant event to spread the strengths and uniqueness of having Dyslexia.

We have been receiving beautiful art pieces and will be announcing our winners during our UOB roadshow on the 1st of October!

There are a total of 3 categories for this competition and everyone gets a chance to participate! Click on the tabs above for more information.

INTRODUCING OUR JUDGES 

Mix Media – Open Category

Takanao Todo

Takanao Todo a well-known architect from Japan was diagnosed with dyslexia during his school years. He is currently a studio professor at Chulalongkorn University for INDA (International Program in Design and Architecture) from 2019. He graduated from Architectural Association School of Architecture (England) in 2008, worked for various architectural farms in London, Paris, Munich, Tokyo and Singapore. His main focus in architectural design is material research and innovative design concept, which drive him win numerous architectural awards including, London Design Award “Silver Winner” + DP Inspiration award “Design of the year” with “Cada cuba huele al vino que tiene” (2017), Honorable mention for “Paphos Beach Parasol” (2017), DP Inspiration award honorable mention for “Through the looking prism” (2017), Winner and commissioned for the competition for “the pavilion @ ECO WORLD” (2016), finalist for Dubai Expo Singapore Pavilion (2016).

Mike Juggins

Artist Mike Juggins is a community artist, filmmaker and educator based in Devon, UK. He studied Fine art at UWE in Bristol, graduating with a BA Honours – Art in a Social Context, in 1999. Being a dyslexic himself, Mike has a greater understanding and appreciation for the dyslexics, their strengths and weaknesses. He chose to focus on the ability rather than the disability of this disadvantaged group through his creative works.

Mike has lectured internationally on the issue of dyslexia and has a positive outlook on the subject. His written and illustration work about dyslexia has been published widely and his inclusive film work shown across the globe, including the London DisABILITY film festival and Chan 4.

However, Mike’s first love is painting. Recently, he exhibited his paintings at the Tate Modern London and Buckfast Abbey Devon. He also held his first Solo Art Exhibition in Singapore, at The Arts House, in November 2013.

Being a dyslexic himself, Mike has a greater understanding and appreciation for the dyslexics, their strengths and weaknesses. He chose to focus on the ability of this disadvantaged group to help them excel in their artistic inclination and be a contributor to our society.

Karin Ong

Karin is a graduate who pursued her BA (Hons) Fine Arts accredited by Goldsmiths, the University of London in LASALLE College of the Arts. She is a multi-disciplinary artist who majors in the field of painting and has also further explored other mediums such as photography and installation in developing her process. Karin is also a co-founder and director for Artisan Han’s, an art company. She is an enthusiastic, cheerful and passionate person who has a great interest in art who also does art teaching to all ages. Apart from art teaching, she is also a Muralist and has also appeared in the newspaper, The Business Times and Home Decor Singapore website

Karin spent her 10 – week internship at Dyslexia Association of Singapore, teaching children the various form of art. She received excellent reviews from parents and supervisors for her professionalism and passion for teaching students.

 

Colouring Contest – Junior/ Youth/ UOB Staff

Mr. Mervyn Koh

Managing Director and Country Head of Business Banking

Mr. Mervyn Koh joined UOB in May 2002 and has more than 16 years’ experience in the banking industry covering a variety of functions, including Human Resource and Business Banking. 

He currently holds the position of Managing Director and Country Head of Business Banking Singapore with focus on SME (Small Businesses) as well as overseeing Product Management, Middle Office, Sales Management, Portfolio & Risk Management. 

Nadia Oh

Lecturer LaSalle College for the Arts

Nadia is a visual artist, graduated from Goldsmiths' College, the University of London with a Master of Art in Fine Art at LASALLE College of the Arts in the year 2014. Her artwork is whimsically poetic and intricate. Inspired by fleeting moments of light and shadow in nature as seen from the confines of an apartment block, Nadia's work provokes the audience to slow down and look beyond prosaic earthly representation to catch a glimpse of precious eternal treasures residing in empyrean dimensions. She uses photographic prints on fabric with stitching techniques that take an impressionistic approach through the processes of cyanotype and photography. Nadia's works also include drawings, paintings and installation. Nadia had taken part in group exhibitions showcased in Singapore and overseas.

Mrs Cynthia Tan

Board Member, Dyslexia Association of Singapore

Mrs Cynthia Tan Guan Hiang is a key Executive Committee Member of the Dyslexia Association of Singapore. She is the chairperson of the Exco's Fund Raising Committee and took the lead in organizing the very successful Charity Gala Dinner at the Singapore Island Country Club on September 2012 which raised $1.3 million for the DAS.

Mrs Cynthia is a member of the OCBC Group Management Team. She was appointed as Executive Vice President in April 2005. Being the Head of Group for Human Resources, she is responsible for the management as well as training and development of OCBC's human capital. Mrs Cynthia has over 29 years of experience and has held senior-level positions with DFS Ventures, Mentor Graphics, Apple Computer and National Semiconductor.

Mrs Cynthia was also a former lecturer in Business Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Hull, UK.

SINGAPORE, OUR HOME

This colour competition is open to all DAS pre-school and primary school students. Students can use any medium to colour i.e. watercolours, crayons, acrylic.

There are two AGE categories:

  1. Junior Category (5 - 9 years old) - Download Junior colouring template here

There can only be a maximum of one entry per student.

Colouring templates can be downloaded from our website or collected from any of these 3 DAS centres:

  • Bishan Learning Centre
  • Jurong Point Learning Centre

Submissions

  • Download and print the colouring template provided.
  • All participants must register here first. A confirmation email with your artist number will be sent to you in your email. 
  • Artwork must be solely done by the student.
  • Artwork can be done in any medium (colour pencils, crayon, markers, watercolour, etc)
  • Entries must be submitted by 22 September 2019. Please ensure your art piece has your artist number.
  • Entries can be submitted at Tampines, Jurong Point or Bishan Learning Centre, or through their DAS Educational Therapist. No online submissions are allowed.
  • Each entry must be accompanied by the child’s full name as registered and artist number.
  • All entries will be displayed on social media platforms. Top entries will be displayed in future ARTVenture exhibitions.

 

Judging CRITERIA

  • Entries will be judged within their age capabilities.
  • Entries will be judged based on creativity, originality, control of the medium, and overall aesthetic.
  • Winners should be notified of our selections by 1 October 2019.

ARTVENTURE LOGO DESIGN

ARTVenture started out in 2016 is looking for a logo to represent ourselves. Recently revamped, we want to go beyond just seeking artistic talents for DAS special events. We want to nurture interests and discover platforms for our students to showcase their artworks. We are looking for students to design our logo which carries a message about who we are - an art programme for children with unique learning needs.

THERE ARE TWO AGE CATEGORIES:

  1. DAS students from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4. (13- 17 years old)
  2. DAS alumni in Tertiary institution. (ITE, Polytechnic, Junior College)

There can only be a maximum of one entry per student.

The logo design, together with the artist number to be sent to nicole@das.org.sg

*There will only be one winner for this competition. The winner may be asked to provide original design, which will be returned.

SUBMISSIONS

THROUGH THE EYES OF DYSLEXIA

Through the Eyes of Dyslexia, as the main theme of the competition, we are looking for art pieces that bring out the world through the eyes of a person with dyslexia.  You may have a loved one with dyslexia, know of someone with dyslexia or you may have dyslexia yourself, we want to see your creation and interpretation from various perspectives. 

All art pieces submitted will need to be accompanied with a short write-up about your work. We seek your rights to upload all pieces on our official DAS Instagram upon your submission.
