Keynote 1 Title: Assessment in Early Childhood

Liu Yimei, Assistant Director of SpLD Assessment Services, Dyslexia Association of Singapore


Yimei worked as a Probation Officer with the then Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) before joining the Dyslexia Association of Singapore as a Psychologist. In her work as an Educational Psychologist, she predominantly conducts assessment to ascertain the learning needs of individuals. In addition to conducting assessments as part of an investigation process for learning difficulties, she is also involved in the training and supervision of new psychologists at the DAS. Yimei has a keen interest in the area of dyslexia and Chinese. She obtained an Advanced Diploma in Chinese Language Teaching from the KLC International Institute and participated in the initial development of the Chinese Programme at the DAS. The research also brought her to presentations at conferences such as the International Dyslexia Association Conference and the International Symposium on Bilingualism.

Keynote 2 Title: The Landscape of Inclusive Practices within the Preschool Sector

Clara Lim, Associate Lecturer, Advanced Diploma in Special Needs and Inclusive Education, SEED Institute


Clara Lim has many years of experience in special needs and education. Her areas of expertise include inclusive practices, early childhood development and developmental psychology. She is an Associate Lecturer, workshop facilitator and curriculum developer.  Clara has the ability to assess children’s educational needs, develop and implement educational strategies and programmes to maximise the abilities and potential of clients with special needs. She has worked with children with Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental delay, Autism, Developmental delay and other related disabilities.

Clara is a believer of continuing professional development and has acquired a Master’s Degree in Education in Developmental Psychology.

Workshop 1 Title: Early Literacy

Safinah Binte Hassan


Safinah Binte Hassan is a Senior Educational Therapist based in Jurong Point Learning Centre and has been working with children with Specific Learning Differences for over ten years. On top of teaching MOE-aided DAS Literacy Programme (MAP), she is also a dual-specialised teacher with the Preschool Team. Safinah has a Post Graduate Certificate in Special Education Needs (USW), a Degree in Information Technology as well as a Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers (Dyslexia). She also has Associate Fellow status at Registrar of Educational Therapists - Asia (RETA). Safinah constantly aspires to provide quality service to dyslexics of all ages.

Rahayu Binte Rahiman


Rahayu has been working with children with Specific Learning Differences for over ten years. She was an Allied Educator, Learning Support Officer and Preschool Early Intervention teacher. She holds a Diploma in Special Education and Dyslexia Studies and is currently pursuing her Degree in Psychology. Artistic and creative, Rahayu loves to draw.

Mathana Subhas Balan


Mathana holds a degree in Psychology, and graduated with a Specialist Diploma in Educational Therapy. She is currently pursuing her Post Graduate degree in Special Education with NTU-NIE, and is an Educational Therapist with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore for the past seven years. Prior to joining DAS, she taught young children speech and drama as well as dance. Her teaching philosophy is to engage the child in the way they learn best.

Seow Li Ang


Seow Li is an Educational Therapist at the Dyslexia Association of Singapore. She received her Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Psychology from the National University of Singapore (NUS). She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs from the University of South Wales, UK. She recognises the importance of early intervention and has been constantly helping children to maximise their potential.

 

Workshop 2 Title: Writing in the Early Years

Sandra Ngan


Sandra holds a Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Teaching. She has been involved in the preschool sector since 1983. Sandra started working with children at risk of dyslexia in 2014, having completed her Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Teaching in the same year. She has completed the Advanced Diploma in Special Needs and Inclusive Education in 2016.

Janitha Panicker


Janitha has been an educator for 15 years and prior to joining DAS, she was a full time Montessori Preschool Teacher and a Special Needs teacher. She is currently a Senior Educational Therapist with DAS, dual-specializing in Preschool Early Intervention program. She holds a degree in Psychology, Diplomas in Special Education - Dyslexia Studies; Managing Learning Disorders, TESOL and a Post Graduate Certificate with the University of South Wales.

Raihana Bte Mohd Hashim


Raihana is a preschool educational therapist at Dyslexia Association of Singapore. She graduated with a Diploma in Child Psychology and Early Education from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. A passionate early childhood educator, Raihana strives to nurture children's confidence and esteem through fun, meaningful and developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

Cherith Wong


Cherith is a preschool educational therapist at Dyslexia Assocation of Singapore. She graduated with a Diploma in Child Psychology and Early Education from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She is passionate about helping young learners learn literacy through arts and craft.

 

 

Workshop 3 Title: Managing Social and Emotional Difficulties

 

Cheryl Yeo


Cheryl has been an educational therapist with the Dyslexia Association since July 2015. She has more than 15years of experience in working with children from 6 months old to 6years old. She has worked aboard in 6 countries over 12years in Montessori Education and curriculum planning, before returning to Singapore in 2014. Cheryl holds a Masters Education in Inclusive Education, focusing on Social Emotional Behaviour Difficulties in Early Childhood (UK), and an International Diploma in Montessori Education, focusing on early years (UK). She has recently, in January 2017, achieved a Certificate in Autism (Early Intervention) with the Autism Resources Centre Singapore.

Natasha Mastura Malek


Natasha is a Senior Educational Therapist with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore. She has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs with the University of South Wales (UK). She graduated from Monash University (Aus) with a Bachelor of Arts and has also received a Diploma in Early Childhood Educational from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Joanne Tan


Joanne is a Senior Educational Therapist at the Dyslexia Association of Singapore. She holds a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College. Her interest in literacy development and early intervention sprouted work in research, curriculum planning, teacher’s training and awareness talks. She believes in taking a holistic approach to help children learn and appreciate literacy.

Liz and Lee firmly believe that parents and early childhood educators play a key role in facilitating speech and language development in young children, and are influential in facilitating the development of social thinking in them through the purposeful use of language.
 
Firm believers of early intervention, Liz and Lee are committed to supporting parents and educators of young children with diverse learning needs.
 
Liz is formerly a preschool educator and lecturer who holds a Master of Science (Speech and Language Pathology) and a Master of Education (Special Education).
 
Lee is formerly a mainstream school teacher who holds a Master of Science (Speech and Language Pathology) and a Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics).
