Our awareness talks can be conducted online or face to face at your school or organisation.

Is your child struggling at school? Are they forgetting many things even after teaching them? Are you noticing that they lack the motivation to study? These can be signs of Dyslexia.

DAS serves to elevate public awareness and understanding of dyslexia through talks and screenings. We conduct free Awareness Talks to reach out to many platforms of the audience - educators, parents, medical practitioners and the general public.

Our talks are focused to inspire our audience with a deeper understanding of dyslexia, subsequently empowering them with the ability to identify dyslexic students and tips on how we can help our students with their daily academic demand as well as their self-esteem. With up-to-date information, visuals and hands-on activities, our Awareness Talks aim to ensure that audiences leave with a better appreciation of dyslexia.

Each talk lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours on average.

Please call 6444 5700 or email ora@das.org.sg for more information and request for a schedule.

PREP 2 PSLE AWARENESS TALK

The PREP 2 PSLE awareness talk will primarily focus on sharing basic tips and strategies on how to teach struggling learners on topics related to Synthesis and Transformation and Reading Comprehension components. The P2P team also came up with their own instructional approach: RIMAIR (Review, Introduce, Model, Apply, Independent (application), Review). Previously learnt concepts are constantly reviewed and new concepts are introduced systematically. The team will offer you a glimpse of how within each lesson, students will be able to gradually progress towards achieving the independent application of skills when attempting PSLE format question types.

PRESCHOOL AWARENESS TALK

Dyslexia impacts the ability to read, spell and write. It is normal for young children to experience early literacy learning difficulties when they first explore learning. Signs of prolonging struggles in areas related directly to activities in reading, writing and spelling – despite ongoing efforts in teaching and the child striving to learn—is a cause for concern;  especially if the child is falling behind class peers with a literacy learning gap of more than 6 months. Early literacy intervention where learning strategies are explicitly taught, and actively practised in-class during the intervention, can reduce the gap in learning; empowering children to propel their individual learning more effectively in kindergarten/childcare.

Teachers and parents will gain a better understanding of dyslexia, including early signs of learning struggles.  Dyslexia is not scary. There are many highly successful dyslexics. Learning strategies can make a difference. There are avenues of help. E.g. free preschool public screening.

What is the talk about?

The talk is for 1.5 hours. It covers

  1.  Introduction to DAS, its programmes and services
  2.  Basic facts about dyslexia
  3.  Signs of early literacy learning difficulties
  4.  How to go about seeking help
  5.  Financial assistance
  6.  Questions and Answer

Participants can attend this talk without attending the General Awareness Talk first.

UNDERSTANDING DYSLEXIA - IMPACT ON STUDENTS IN INSTITUTES OF HIGHER LEARNING (IHL)

Students or individuals with dyslexia might start out fine in the early years at school. But gradually, as they grow older or progress to the Institute of Higher Learning, the increase in demand for schoolwork can become a struggle for them. If left unsupported, dyslexia may lead to low self-esteem, behavioural problems, withdrawal from friends, family and school.

This understanding dyslexia awareness talk for the IHL audience is presented in 1.5 hours. The audience will get to:

  1. Know more about the cause and facts about dyslexia
  2. Find out the different screening materials available for IHL students
  3. Learn about the different services available to support IHL students with dyslexia.
